Hi

Piet Niemann here…. The son of a farmer, I grew up appreciating the wide open spaces of the Free State plains. As you might expect, I eventually ended up being a farmer myself, enjoying being in the industry.

After enjoying farming for a good number of years, I decided to settle down on the west coast. Although I do not have the privilege of farming anymore, I still enjoy any contact with the industry at any possible opportunity. Wherever possible, I try to connect with farmers in the region, learning about their farming methods – always fishing for new ideas….

As such, I was taken in by the idea of controlling pests without chemicals – because every unnatural interference in nature has consequences.

I guess I will always be a farmer…

That’s just me.

Piet Niemann

Many farmers become stuck on conventional methods. As such, biological insect control does not feature high on any priority list. Considering the fact that farming is a constant battle for many farmers all over the world, it is no wonder that there is little time or desire for change.

Unfortunately, the conventional means of pest control – pesticides and insecticides – do not come without a price. Poison tends to be indiscriminate, and kills off anything in its way. Alas, it also attacks insects that may have been helpful to your operation – and of course those who pose no threat to you. As such, it tends to disrupt the balance of nature, and wreak havoc on the ecological system. Other animals – which need to feed on the eliminated species – are suddenly without food, and their numbers dwindle.

In some cases, these side effects may affect animals you actually need – requiring additional steps to compensate for the damage done to the environment, and costing you even more money, or demanding even more of your time.

Ironically, biological insect control tends to cost less than conventional applications. The prices of pesticides and insecticides have been soaring over the past few years, placing incredible financial burdens on many farmers worldwide. For those who lack the financial reserves, the ongoing expense comes at an even higher price – considering the interest on loans taken to stay in operation. Additionally, since there are no side effects, there are no secondary expenses that need to be covered. The job is done once, and everything is taken care of.

Biological insect control does not only cost less, but it also helps you to run a more efficient operation – due to the lack of side effects. The lack of damage to the ecological system allows you to live in harmony with nature – instead of trying to fight it. As a result, you will not be adding to the compounding effect of damage done to nature – instead, you will be reversing the effects that already took place on your farm.

Please follow the links below to find out all you need to know about biological insect control:

Know your enemy the fly:

An adult female can lay up to 900 eggs in +- 30 days. The adults average 10 mm in length. Eggs are white, elongated and about 1.2 mm in length. Larvae are yellowish-white maggots up to 12 mm in length. Under ideal conditions fly pupae develop within 7days. From 2 days later flies appear completing the fly life cycle within as short as 10 days.

Know your friend the parasitoid:

Muscidifurax raptor is a minute, black wasp, about 1-2 mm in length. It is nocturnal, ant-like and prefers to walk rather than to fly. They can easily disperse up to 50 meters. This parasitoid can parasitize a number of fly species e.g. housefly, stable fly and other filth flies.

Directions for use:

The best results are obtained where fly control is addressed in an integrated program i.e.

Limit fly breeding sites to the minimum.

Control adult flies. Besides being a nuisance, they lay thousands of eggs

Follow a regular release program of BISA parasitic wasps to suppress the hatching of flies and the subsequent need for adult fly control.

The BISA product is parasitised fly pupae, which contains developing parasitic wasps. These wasps will hatch as adults on your property who in turn will lay their eggs on new fly pupae, killing developing flies in the process. Please treat the BISA product as live organisms and prevent exposure to potentially lethal conditions such as high temperatures (in closed vehicles), direct sunlight, poisons, drowning, etc.

Integrated fly control program:

There can be no doubt that an effective fly control programme is vital for successful animal production systems. Erratic, short term efforts to control adult flies is almost certain to fail and is at most a sporadic waste of money. It is recommended that livestock producers develop an integrated fly control programme for their specific conditions. This will enable producers, the livestock industry and the wider community to reap significant production, animal & human welfare, and enviromental benefits. Parasitic wasps for biological fly control is now commercially available in South Africa. It should be included in an integrated approach towards fly control for cost-effective long term control of flies, while minimising insecticide usage.

Click here for Frequently asked questions

Lucitrap for blowflies:

Blowfly attacks cost the country approximately R 40 million a year. An ewe that has been attacked by blowflies will not mate easily and will produce less wool of a lower quality. She will also have to receive high cost individual treatment.

Nylon Wool Packs:

To stay competitive in the world market, it is imperative that South African wool, in line with global trends should be marketed in Nylon wool packs. The South African Wool Industry has taken a stand on this issue and decided that only nylon packs would be acceptable as from July 2007.

Not too long ago, biological insect control was just a dream. Sure, there were people trying to work in that direction – but for the mainstream farmer, it was not always practical or possible. Fortunately, the dream has materialised – and it is now possible to control some insects by using only natural means.

House- and stable flies:

The different fly species are well known for the problems they cause among farmers – especially the house fly and stable fly. In order to control these creatures, a natural enemy of theirs is released into the area.

Muscidifurax is group of wasp species – tiny (one to two millimetres) – which breed by laying eggs inside fly pupa. The adult wasp will sting the pupa, killing it in the process – and then deposit its eggs inside it. In many cases, the wasp will even kill the pupa without depositing any eggs – and merely feed on it. These creatures specifically target different fly species – and pose no threat to humans or animals.

It is unlikely that the wasp population will get out of hand – since they depend on flies as food and breeding space. Once the fly population starts dwindling, a natural equilibrium will be established – perfect biological insect control.

Bowflies:

Bowflies cost local farmers millions every year. However, their numbers can be suppressed by simply applying a trap that has been developed in Australia, but tested and proven locally as well. Once again, it allows totally organic insect control.

Bilological insect control, or natural insect control, is not merely a vision anymore – it is a reality. Insects that were controlled at a high price (both financially and environmentally) before, can now be controlled without causing any side effects.
